Dolphin Pool Cleaner Not Picking Up Dirt? Here's Why
The robot drives around happily, but the pool floor still has dirt on it. When a Dolphin isn't picking up debris, the drive is fine and the suction path — intake, impeller, filter — is where the problem lives. Five causes cover nearly every case.
1. The filter is already full
A full basket has nowhere to put new debris; water still flows, dirt doesn't stay. Empty and rinse after every cycle during heavy-debris season. If fine dust clouds out of the robot when you lift it, the filter is past full.
2. Wrong filter grade fitted
Most Dolphins ship with two grades: coarse panels for leaves and ultra-fine panels for dust, sand and algae. Coarse panels let fine dirt straight through — the robot "cleans" all day and the floor still looks dusty. Fit the ultra-fine panels for sand, silt and post-storm dust.
3. Filter door or compartment not latched
An unlatched filter door lets collected debris wash back into the pool as the robot climbs. Make sure every latch clicks fully closed and door seals are seated, with nothing trapped in the seal.
4. Blocked intake or weak impeller
Flip the robot and check the intake ports underneath for a leaf mat or plastic bag blocking the opening. Then check the impeller for wrapped hair — a partly jammed impeller still spins but moves far less water. Clearing it restores suction instantly.
5. Worn brushes not lifting dirt
The front brush flicks settled dirt into the intake stream. When the brush fins wear short, dirt stays on the floor, especially fine sand on smooth surfaces. Compare fin height with a new brush photo and replace if worn — see our parts guide.
Fine dust that keeps coming back
If ultra-fine panels fill with the same grey dust every day, the dust may be dead algae or plaster dust — a water-chemistry issue no cleaner can outrun. Balance the water and the "dirt" stops being produced. For all other symptoms, the full troubleshooting guide has you covered.
