Dolphin Pool Cleaner Not Moving? 6 Fixes That Work

Dolphin robotic pool cleaner

Your Dolphin hums, the lights are on, but the robot just sits on the pool floor. When a Dolphin turns on but won't move, the pump motor is usually fine and the problem is in the drive system — tracks, belts and the drive motor. Here are the six causes, starting with the most common.

1. Derailed or stretched tracks

Look at both tracks: each should sit centred on its wheels with even tension. A track that has slipped off a wheel, or stretched so much it slips under load, stops all movement. Re-seat a derailed track by hand; replace stretched tracks — they're inexpensive wear parts, like tyres.

2. Debris wedged in the drive

Twigs, hair bands and pebbles love the gap between track and body. Disconnect power, remove the brushes if needed, and clear everything you find. Rotate the tracks by hand afterwards — they should turn with steady, moderate resistance.

3. Worn or snapped drive belt

Inside the drive housing, belts transfer the motor's rotation to the wheels. If the tracks spin freely by hand with no resistance, a belt has likely snapped. Belt kits are available for most models and are a screwdriver-level repair.

4. Impeller jam mimicking a drive fault

On some models the robot pauses movement when the impeller jams. Clear the impeller (see starts-then-stops guide, cause 2) and retest.

5. Cable twist limiting movement

A badly tangled cable can physically hold the robot in place or trip it onto its side. Straighten the cable fully and restart.

6. Drive motor failure

If tracks are seated, the drive is clear, belts are intact and a reset changes nothing, the drive motor itself has failed. That's a sealed motor-unit repair for an authorised service centre — check your warranty before paying for anything.

Movement problems are far rarer on robots that get a monthly once-over — two minutes checking tracks and brushes, per our maintenance guide. For every other symptom, start at the master troubleshooting guide.
